  • Hair-Thickening Charm - Unknown

Personality:

hard-working | loyal | perfectionist | empathetic | self-absorbed | fickle | insecure

Lalita is a hard-working girl that blends right into a crowd, and she wouldn't have it any other way, as she finds little desire to stand out. Rather than being revered and respected among her peers, she’d prefer to be with them in a more intimate atmosphere where she is accepted as one of them. She has a deep desire of acceptance, and at times it will even override justice, meaning that Lalita is not beyond grudgingly telling a white lie or breaking a rule if it means she’ll avoid conflict and remain liked.

Though she keeps a deadpan face most of the time, emotions quickly overtake the girl internally, and while that makes it easy for her to empathize with others her sensitivity can also lead to her over reading a situation and misinterpreting. Because of this, Lalita changes her mind frequently and takes a long time to make decisions.

Lalita tries to be aware of her flaws and practically obsesses over self-improvement, leading to her spending lots of time solely focusing on herself, unintentionally making her quite the self-absorbed individual. She tries to cover up her insecurities with a face of makeup or studying behind a thick textbook, though neither of those things help dispel her prissy and detached image.

Although she takes some warming up to, Lalita makes for a fiercely loyal friend that will gladly put her own worries aside for anyone who has her respect.

Background:

Childhood

Lalita grew up in an affluent household, making for a comfortable and blissfully uneventful childhood. Her father was a pureblood who worked as a Hit Wizard, and had met his also pureblooded wife at an Indian wizard’s hospital after being injured on the job. As a healer, she tended to his injuries, and when he checked out three weeks later, she eloped with him to England. There was some feud at first between the families, though it quieted down after Mr. Buckley’s family found out his bride was pureblooded and wasn’t contaminating the bloodline.

Having a hit wizard for a father and a healer for a mother, both parents were often MIA because of work, so Lalita and her brother spent much of their time together alone in their spacious home. While they were loosely monitored by house elves indoors, outdoors they were watched by their Uncle Abel, a squib who’d been disowned by their father’s family a few years before the Second Wizarding War and lived on his brother’s estate as a gardener. The siblings loved him regardless, saddened that their blood relatives would do something so cruel.

The Buckleys rarely visited their British side of the family, as their father no longer agreed with their purist views and didn’t want them to influence his children. Many pleasant summers were spent in India, however, visiting their mother’s strict yet open-minded family.

Letter to Hogwarts

Many years later, Lalita’s own letter to Hogwarts arrived in the mail. After hearing many tales from the past few years of Arav’s achievements and legacy he was leaving her, she was none too excited for the pressure of living up to expectations. When her parents were home, for the past several months they’d attempted to instill ambition and independence into their daughter, fearful that her passive, agreeable nature would hinder her success at school. Lalita agreed, though these talks began to arise feelings of self-doubt within that would later lead to her insecurity.

Lalita sat alone on her first train to Hogwarts, too preoccupied with her anxiety she thinly veiled as arrogance, awaiting the inevitable moment when The Sorting Hat would take its seat upon her head and call out the House she’d be spending the next 7 years in.

The Sorting Hat

Though her parents had never explicitly stated it, Lalita knew they’d wanted her to be sorted into House Slytherin. They themselves held no personal stigma against any of the Houses, but preferred Slytherin for the sake of blending in with relatives and Lalita being able to be with her brother; she could see him sitting at the back of the Slytherin table as she waited for her name to be called to begin the sorting. Since he’d started his time at Hogwarts, they’d spoken less and less to each other, an unknown wedge driven between them. But this could fix it.

When her name was called, Lalita shakily took a seat on the stool and bit her lip as the tattered hat was placed upon her head. She closed her eyes, trying to think of the girl her parents wanted her to be. The hat sat on her head for several dragged-out seconds, debating between Hufflepuff and Slytherin before calling out “Hufflepuff!” to the entire Great Hall. Lalita’s eyes fluttered open and instinctively looked towards her brother but quickly dropped her gaze and stumbled to the Hufflepuff table, not sure if it was all just a dream or not.

Although she was a hard-working, pure-blooded girl with budding ambitions, her overwhelming dependence on others, loyalty, and empathy tipped her over to Hufflepuff.

Hogwarts

Lalita spent her first two years nigh friendless, in denial that her sorting hadn’t been some kind of mistake. Her negative aura and obsession with herself kept many away, causing others to think she was stuck-up. Because of her angsting, she pulled barely passing grades and held strained relationships with her family. Though no one in her family was necessarily mad at her, there was an unspoken silence of unmet expectations. From her third year onwards, Lalita tried to be more amiable with little success, though there was noticeable improvement in her schoolwork.

As her fourth year approaches, Lalita has tried to channel her feelings of insecurity and incompetence into schoolwork and her appearance to seem friendlier, as she does not enjoy being painted as a lone wolf.

Family:

  • Father: Gavin Buckley- 45, A British pure-blooded wizard, currently works as a hit wizard and spends much time abroad. A former blood purist and now blood traitor, his job has made him come to see all as equal in the eyes of the law. A slow-to-admit Hufflepuff alumni who has a secret goofy side and only wants the best for his children.
  • Mother: Jaya Kampur-Buckley - 42, Pureblooded witch hailing from India, currently a healer at St. Mungo’s. From her work and upbringing she’s learned to be very accepting of wizards from all backgrounds. Keeps a cheery demeanor, although becomes serious when appropriate and works well under pressure.
  • Brother: Arav Buckley-  17, a 7th year Slytherin. Was nearly sorted into Hufflepuff for his warm heart and loyalty, but was ultimately sorted into Slytherin instead for his cunning and self-driven nature. Lalita holds a grudge against him, partially out of jealousy and partially out of fear that he secretly looks down on her and refuses to acknowledge him in public. Arav loves his sister to bits, though, and doesn’t really understand the silent treatment he’s getting.
  • Uncle: Abel Buckley- 42, Gavin’s disowned squib brother who has been allowed to live on his brother’s estate as a gardener. A solemn man who enjoys working with plants and creating creative sculptures from hedges. Even though he’s been legally disowned from the Buckley family, Gavin and his children still treat him like family.

Pet:
  • Name: Banao
  • Species: Corn Snake
  • Gender: Male
  • Personality: Despite being a cold-blooded reptile, Banao is a surprisingly gentle, mild mannered snake that enjoys lazing around, patiently waiting for his next meal. Lalita finds he is fairly affectionate, though others see him as fiercely overprotective…
  • Background: Lalita received Banao as a birthday present from her brother during her third year, and reluctantly accepted it since her pet newt had died not too long before. It may or may not be a coincidence that even though Nay is Slytherin’s symbolic creature, he sports the colors of Hufflepuff.

Miscellaneous:
  • Lalita seems to have a particular affinity for Slytherins, appearing to be both in awe yet also terrified of them at the same time, probably admiring their ambitious traits but scared of appearing mediocre to them. She can hardly talk to one without stumbling over her words.
  • Bilingual in English and Hindi.
  • Often the first to wake up in the morning for adequate time to style her hair and makeup.
  • Favorite subjects are Divination, Potions, and Charms.
  • Loves the smell of polished cauldrons and new textbooks. As one can imagine, she keeps her school supplies organized and in pristine condition might even have embroidered her name into her clothes
  • There's a badge on her sweater, though it's hidden by her hair.
  • Her sweater is tucked into her skirt as some kind of fashion statement uh
